Superheroes Dominate

When I was growing up, it was AMT kits. You know 3-n-1 kits of model cars that you could build stock, street, or custom.

I was a collector of the models and sold them all before I moved to Bangkok on eBay. I hated to see some of them go, the real treats were the metal model cars from before the widespread use of plastic, maybe it was the glue, lead-based paint, or the filler putty that kept me on a model until it was finished when I was a youngster.

Many a model I picked up before the fresh coat of candy-apple red spray paint from Arlan’s, Spartans (Spartan-Atlantic), or E.J. Korvette had a chance to dry.

If you want to learn a few lessons in sales, marketing, and guts, read the book about E.J. Korvette (eight Jewish Korean Veterans).

The model makers I know deal with a more contemporary form of assembly; monsters and superheroes. This is probably because I have friends in the animation industry (well-known television shows).

I was on a flight from Tokyo and had purchased a rare, new release, model for a neighbor and animator of Godzilla in the Ginza district of Japan. (very cool area, by the way)

On the JAL flight there was no room under the seat or above, so it was strapped in the seat next to me. (very polite airline) Anyway, I brought it to L.A. in A-1 shape and my friend was most thankful.

The market for licensed superhero models in Thailand has grown by more than 20 percent per year over the last few years and is worth about 5 billion baht, which in dollars is about 150 million dollars.

The reason is because of the increasing number of animation companies, the advanced technology to make models, and the increasing number of animators.

There’s a new version of Ultraman coming soon and Dragon Ball, Masked Rider, and Gundum will soon be household words; that is, if the Thai animation producers have their way.

The Thai animators know that they have to crack the U.S. market to really make it big.

Ps. I was going to write about Angelica, Stephanie, and Monica, three hotties that I met yesterday on the Sukhumvit on my walk home from my office, but I think I’ll just leave it all to your imagination. In a word; outstanding!
