Thailand’s Pollution Control Department put a damper on my day, here in the capital city of Bangkok.
According to them, Bangkok, Hat Yai, and Chang Mai all have unhealthy air. They reveal that there are at least 5 carcinogenic substances in each breath we take.
Blaming the emissions from vehicles, the air that we breathe in these cities contains carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and benzo(a)pyrene from the incomplete combustion from vehicle engines which use diesel fuel.
Motorists are being urged to check their vehicles for proper combustion and the use of natural gas is being encouraged as an alternative to petrol and diesel.
Bangkok, in particular, suffers from vehicles, such as busses, belching black exhaust fumes which contain nothing but nasty elements.
This is one advantage to the monsoon rains which cleanses the air almost daily (nightly), but then there’s the matter of acid rain falling into the waterways, lakes, and coating the buildings and structures of the city.
