Plastic is gaining media attention, especially bottled water, where the bottle is made from plastic.
The bisphenol A or BPA scare is being woven into the world consumer lexicon like a tightly knit sweater.
Warnings and cautionary tales to avoid this harmful and potentially fatal chemical keep the news junkies busy.
STOP THE PRESSES;
Once again, in my local Odermark tailor shop on Sukhumvit road in Bangkok, I have met another interesting and well informed individual. In fact, I met two yesterday evening in the shop.
Marty and Wolfgang (but this is a different Wolfgang than the one that I wrote about a few weeks ago).
These gentlemen are in the seafood business, which uses a lot of cans to preserve their items and I inquired about this bisphenol A matter.
They were quick to point out something that most people, especially the consumer, are not aware of. Chemical contents in foods, liquids, and other consumer products used to be measured in Parts per Million or PPM, but with advanced technology the ability to measure has become more accurate.
Chemicals and other substances are now measured in
Parts per Billion or PPB.
A billion is a thousand million, so sure, if you break it down to the molecular level, you’re bound to find something.
Marty and Wolfgang brought up new cars and mentioned that if people only knew what that new car smell really was; its fumes from the chemicals that make up the carpeting, seats, and other interior components of a vehicle.
There’s probably some scientist somewhere feeding some defenseless lab rat bisphenol A by the spoonful, in order to come to the conclusion that it can cause kidney failure or death.
What’s in a diet soda?
What’s in a steak? Pour a cola on uncooked piece of meat and see what happens.
Right now, you have over one thousand different bacteria living on your body. How does it feel?
Remember, you can’t stop eating or hold your breath for very long, but you can buy the best food you can, wash your hands before you handle food, and don’t ever watch someone make hotdogs.
Ps. Oh, I forgot to mention; Don’t eat plastic either.
